Drowned Rat

A sweet and kind customer-mistress stops by me in the pouring rain for a lick and a shine, but it is her weatherbeaten sneakers and socks which make the greatest impression on me - the dirt on the outsides of the sneakers; the sloppily undone laces; the ropey brown socks. All these things betray her utter young-womanly contempt for me, even though she is technically performing an act of kindness by (briefly) keeping me company in such inclement weather!

After she has gone, the temporary respite I received from her umbrella has gone too, and I look even more like a drowned rat!
