Footlights Slave

The ‘footlights’ slave, appropriately enough, has a footslave’s-eye view of the actors’ FEET and FOOTWEAR as they perform on the stage in front of him. That’s because his job is not to focus on the play, but on the actors’ FEET, as befits a footslave.

A pretty actress extemporises directly in front of and above the footlights slave

His role is to focus on her FEET and FOOTWEAR

He must NOT focus on the actress's words or the play

Only on her FEET!

In this case, she is wearing BOOTS and SOCKS

So he humbly and silently studies the underside of her BOOT

The treads

The scuffmarks

The creases in the beige-brown leather

The STITCHES in her white SOCKTOP

Not forgetting, of course, her fellow actor's FEET

The footlights slave must have regard for the master-sir's FOOTWEAR also

For he too is the footslave's superior!

Indeed, the footlights slave is not fit to even think about his betters above their FEET

This is his lowly place - staring at the FEET of those above him

The audience, meanwhile, are enjoying the performance

Not the footlights slave's performance - they barely even notice him!

He's just a nothing and a nobody

He will never be able to make a name for himself

He's just the footlights slave
