Royal Feetwasher

The palace footslave must wash his master’s royal feet in front of his master’s wife and a royal courtier. Note how the courtier is faux-fanning the slave in a supposed gesture of sympathy and compassion and yet is holding a threatening whip next to the slave’s naked back. The mocking expression on the courtier’s face betrays his true feelings towards the slave – which are feelings of utter contempt.

Nor can the lowly footservant expect to receive any sympathy from the only female present in the scene. She too despises the slave as he washes the feet of her manly husband seated next to her, and will soon have him remove her royal slippers in order to have him wash her feet too.

Finally, observe how the magnificent Royal master is resting his as yet unwashed, right foot on top of the slave’s humble head in a gesture of absolute power and authority over his lowliest of subjects. Truly the slave is the inferior of everyone present in this scene and is fit only to serve their feet. Shame on him!
