Variety is the spice of a public footslave’s humble life. Throughout the day he must deal with every conceivable kind of female footwear – from heavy, lace-up workboots; to smart shoes; to scruffy sneakers; to brightly-coloured ballet flats; to strappy sandals; to stylish ankleboots. He must show them all, and their pretty wearers, an equal degree of footslavish respect. For they are boots, shoes and sandals of his betters.
