Local resident Ms Oladayo Madam is giving her cousin from Nigeria a guided tour of the local neighbourhood:

‘And this is our local, public humble head. We can do whatever we like to him – kick him; whip him; make him kiss our feet! Watch this… Slave, kiss my big toenail, and don’t touch my sandal straps!’

Afterwards, after the mistress’s guest has also used me to lickshine her dirty boots, I hear her ask her hostess as they turn to walk away from me ‘What’s his name?’ And Ms Oladayo’s reply? ‘It doesn’t have a name; it’s just a slave!’

Quite right too! For I am just an anonymous, public humble head – at the mercy of all and sundry, as Ms Oladayo madam has so ably demonstrated to our overseas guest.
