An elderly male slave,
his back marked by the WHIP (for he has been subjected to many whippings
during his lowly lifetime) must humbly kneel and study his mistress’s sock as
she relaxes on a park bench chatting to her friends on her phone high above him.
Note how the slave must study her lower sock – the one
closest to the ground – whilst her upper sock is, symbolically as
well as literally, above him. That’s because, in Law, her socks are considered
to be more important than him, and are certainly worth more than him and are
more intelligent than him, being the socks of a young woman.
