An Edwardian gentleman encourages his maid to use the public footslave. Although she is a maidservant, she is clearly of much higher social status than the male slave!

He is much lower than her on the social scale

That's why he must kiss her feet

Her own master watches proceedings approvingly

Indeed, he encourages his maidservant to make use of the public humble-head

Both the slave's betters look down upon him...

...with contempt, not pity

And rightly so, for they are better than the slave!

The man and his maidservant make jokes about the slave as they walk away from him

Their shoes (and spats) are better than the slave... 

...and he knows it

He knows he isn't even worthy to look at their superior, departing shoes!

The slave must kneel in a darkened corner of the master bedroom and sniff and kiss his mistress’s sweaty, used sneakers and socks whilst she is out celebrating New Year’s Eve with her husband.
